  1. L1 establishes the thematic context for the poem while the shift of tone and mood in Ls 2&3 sparks the reader's emotions and reflection on aging and health. John's haiku reminds me the following remark by Confucius:

    ...at forty I had no more doubts; at fifty I knew the will of heaven;...
